Wasp Mimic Hoverfly, Brazil.

Mimicry is a fascinating phenomenon very common in the insect world. In this particular case the hoverfly is harmless and in order to gain protection it mimics aggressive and painfully stinging warrior wasps (species of Synoeca). The process of natural selection has produced a very accurate copy of the wasp so that the fly has acquired dark wings, a narrow waist, longer antennae and a reduction in body hairs.
