Marmalade Fly, England.

This familiar garden visitor is commonly known as the Marmalade Fly from its golden coloration. The photographic process reveals a wide range of different types of hairs which probably have different functions. These range from the very short and thick hairs of the abdomen to the long hairs fringing the thorax.

Remarkably for such a delicate-looking animal, this fly migrates hundreds of miles from southern Europe to Britain every year. As a bonus to the gardener, the larvae of the marmalade fly consume vast quantities of aphids.
