Marion Flightless Moth, Marion Island.
At first sight it is hard to tell exactly which group this insect belongs to, but at high magnification the flattened scales covering the legs and body reveal its true identity - a type of moth. This species is unique to Marion, a cold, remote and windswept island in the Sub-Antarctic Indian Ocean about 1700 km from South Africa.
It has a highly specialised lifestyle feeding on the detritus accumulated in albatross nests. Although completely flightless, the wings are still visible, and are reduced to short, narrow structures.
